i remember doing this as a kid in a big group at school, i always wondered if it was just my little kid imagination thinking that it totally sounded like rain!

It reminds me that the word ‘rhubarb’ is repeated by actors to give the impression of murmuring or conversation offstage, apparently as early as Shakespeare. My German great grandmother used to
use it in a phrase which I think was "making a rhubarb" when she referred to people grumbling over nothing.
BTW, El, rhubarb... I always thought is was 'watermelon!'
